Process Paper
My partners and I picked the Cuban revolution because we had an interest in this event. One of the reasons we were interested is because it was a revolution that was fought during modern times. But this event is often overshadowed by another event that occurred later in Cuba’s 20th century history, and that was the Cuban missile crisis. While many people know something about the missile crisis, very few people know much about the revolution that helped bring it about. We had lots of resources and research materials on the subject including first hand account’s, books, and documentaries, and friends parents who had some knowledge on the subject. We know a friend who's parents even grew up in the town where one of the leaders of the Cuban revolution was from. This is why we picked the Cuban revolution and decided to concentrate on the role of two men, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, as our topic.
We conducted our research through books, internet databases, documentaries and first hand accounts. We also found a lot of tapes of Castro at the United Nations petitioning for American help in the war on Batista, the former Cuban dictator who was put in power by America. Through these resources we have learned a lot about the Cuban revolution that we never knew before.
We decided that a website would be the most effective way to deliver information about the Cuban revolution. Not only is it a creative way to display our learnings but its also easily manipulated and shows our personal style while showing important content and photos on the topic. We also feel that we will get more people interested in our topic by doing a project category that lets people learn about history in different ways.
Our history fair project relates to the history fair theme because it is an actual revolutionary war that was fought and won and was the closest the world has come to World War 3. It was also one of the first revolutions of modern times that was fought without the American governments help, in fact it was so frowned upon by the United States government that there was an embargo on Cuba. The revolution continues to be unpopular in America, especially within the communities of Cuban exiles and their descendants. These are some of the reasons why we chose the Cuban revolution as our topic.
