He was born in his family’s plantation in the Oriente province near Biran, Cuba on August 13, 1926. At the age of 6 he went to school for the first time. His father, Angel was very wealthy at the time and he owned a large sugar plantation. Fidel Castro had six siblings, him being the third. He has brothers Raul and Ramon and 4 sisters Antelita, Juanita, Emma, and Augustina. Fidel helped to organize a strike of sugar workers on his fathers plantation around the age of 13. He went to a boarding school and showed a great amount of intelligence there, which is a main characteristic that he showed all his life. He was very good in the field of sports and in 1944 he was awarded the prize for Cuba's best all-round athlete. By 1945 he went to the University of Havana. There he joined the activist and was involved with gangs. He cleared his bad reputation in the school and began to study Law. This gave Castro more power and education in Cuba. His act in politics began around 1953 when he tried to overthrow the political dictator Fulgencio Batista. He had gotten caught and was told to serve 15 years in prision, but he was set free in 1955. He then traveled to Mexico which is where he met Che Guavera and together they created a plan to overthrow the government once again. When he returned to Cuba he showed up with about 81 insurgents and that led to the guerilla war against the Batista government. When he defeated Batista, he was known as a hero and leader to many people. Little did they know, he would soon become a threat. He created a new government with Jose Miro Cardona. When he suddenly resigned, Castro had become Prime minister. The U.S quickly interpreted the new Cuban government and Castro started making new laws. April 16, 1961 he declared Cuba a socialist state. From there on out there was many fights and ties that compliacted things in Cuba. He led an unfair government. He became harsh and cruel to people. Fidel began suffering from number of bad illnesses, on July 31, 2006 Castro handed over all his power in Cuba to his brother Raul Castro.
Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar
Fulgencio Batista was born on January 16, 1901 in Banes, Cuba. As a result of his parents being sugar platation workers he didnt want to follow there footsteps and live his life like that so in 1921 he joined the army, at age 20. He was head of armed forces and he U.S. goverment saw him as very friendly and reasonable towards politics. He was elected president in 1940, However his term as that position ended shortly in 1944. In 1948 he won a seat in the Cuban Parliament and shortly after he ran for president in 1952. He came to realize that he most likely wouldnt win the election again so he gave up and led a revolt against the government. This took over and he gained his power in Cuba. He formed very close relationships with American Organized crime figures(IMDb, website). This lead to many more revolts, which involved the one and only Fidel Castro. Fidel started a movement, and it failed which sent him to prison. When he was realsed Castro with a fight. This started a large amount of chaos and killings, which damaged Batista's government. Slowley everybody started going under Castro's rule and after a series of defeats, Batista's army resigned and withdrawed from the fight. From there on out he left the country on January 1, 1959 and left Castro to take over. Fulgencio went to the Dominican Republic. He eventually moved to Portugal and died on August 6, 1973.
